The HISTORY Magazine No. 2 deals in detail with the enterprise RHEINÜBUNG, the Atlantic operation of BISMARCK and PRINZ EUGEN. The operation began on May 18, 1941, with the departure of the two battleships from Gotenhafen. It proceeded through the Baltic Sea to Norway, where PRINZ EUGEN and the escort destroyers partially bunkered fuel on May 21. On 23 May the two newest battleships of the Kriegsmarine enter the Denmark Strait. On May 24, 1941, there is an engagement with the British battlecruiser HOOD and the battleship PRINCE OF WALES. On the morning of May 27, 1941, the BISMARCK, with its limited maneuverability, was engaged by the British capital ships KING GEORGE V. and RODNEY, as well as the two heavy cruisers NORFOLK and DORSETSHIRE. Due to depleted ammunition stocks, the ship's command orders the initiation of self-sinking to prevent BISMARCK from falling into enemy hands. After 90 minutes of heroic fighting, BISMARCK - undefeated by the enemy - sinks by self-sinking in the Atlantic. HISTORY Magazine No. 2 is entirely dedicated to this enterprise and, among other things, meticulously shows all the movements of the units involved by means of the first complete operation overview map. Numerous pictures and interviews with surviving BISMARCK and PRINCE EUGEN drivers help to finally correct long overdue details.
